FAQs
Do you offer free screening?
Yes. After our initial conversation, we can meet to determine whether your child would benefit from our services.
Do you accept insurance?
Yes. We currently accept Blue Cross Blue Shield, Sanford Health Plan, and North Dakota Medicaid and intend to expand our insurance partnerships.
What if my insurance does not cover this therapy?
Other payment arrangements can be made on an individual basis.
Why do you need a doctor’s order to provide therapy?
Most insurance companies require a referral from the child’s primary care provider. Your pediatrician (or nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant) will send Sweetwater Therapy orders to evaluate and treat your child.
My child did not qualify for Early Intervention or school-based services but I still want help. Can you work with them?
Yes! Early Intervention and school-based services have their own way of deciding who qualifies for services. Sweetwater Therapy uses a more individualized and collaborative approach to determine a child’s need for services.
What does a speech therapy session look like?
It depends on your child’s age and interests. We create an environment built on trust and fun so that your child’s hard work in therapy feels more like play.
Why does therapy look like play?
We play with a therapeutic purpose. A simple activity like stacking blocks might target eye contact to start a routine, gestures to foster turn-taking, or vocalization to express actions. The toys are tools to achieve our goals—and our experience tells us that children of all ages are more receptive to learning new skills in a playful and compassionate environment.
Can I (and should I) participate in my child’s therapy sessions?
We love when parents or caregivers can attend our therapy sessions! While caregivers are never required to attend a session, we have noticed that our Sweetwater Kids progress faster when therapy strategies are used in daily activities and routines.
Where does therapy take place?
One of our therapists will travel to your home, child’s daycare, or after-school program for regularly scheduled therapy sessions. We consider our travel time part of our service to you, so we do not charge for travel.
How long are your sessions?
Sessions range from 30-45 minutes long. This gives our clinicians enough time to connect with your child and work toward our goals while still keeping your child engaged.
How long will my child be in therapy?
It will probably not surprise you that the answer is “It depends.” The length of therapy is determined by various factors, such as your child’s specific needs, goals, and caregiver collaboration.
Do you offer services other than speech therapy?
Right now, Sweetwater only provides speech therapy. We are looking to add occupational therapy in the near future.
How will you collaborate with others on our child’s team?
We know that some Sweetwater Kids receive services and support from multiple professionals, caregivers, and family members. We are eager to collaborate to make sure your child thrives.
Why does an infant or toddler need speech therapy?
Some infants and toddlers need help developing successful feeding skills as well as confident and competent communication skills. We can help your child find ways to share their wants and needs which can decrease their frustration.
Do you work with nonverbal children?
YES! While children may not be talking, they are still communicating! Many strategies and techniques are available to support communication at all stages of development.
What is feeding therapy?
Feeding therapy helps children learn how to safely bite, chew, and swallow various foods—including developing a willingness to try new foods—and the ability to drink from a cup or straw. For infants, the focus is on ensuring they have all the skills needed to feed effectively.
What is oromyofunctional therapy?
How your child moves their jaw, lips, teeth, and tongue can impact how their entire mouth is structured, from shifting the placement of teeth to narrowing the hard palate. Oromyofunctional therapy can help children of all ages practice and develop the muscles needed for healthy breathing, eating, speaking, and sleeping.
When is the best time to begin therapy for my child?
As soon as you notice that your child might be having an issue. Trust your intuition.
